CEMETERY CLUB (Comedy)
By Ivan Menchell
Directed by Laura Reed
Auditions: Monday and Tuesday, September 20 & 21, 2021; 1 man; 4 women
Looking for strong actors with a great sense of comedic timing. Think “Jewish Golden Girls.”
Ida – She’s the gentlest and most charming of the three widowed friends and the one who faces life the most realistically. She is sweet and happy in her memories of Murray but ready to move on past grief and to accept new challenges.
Lucille – The most brazen one, always looking for a good deal and good time. She is eager to get her feet back in the waters of dating, partly as revenge against her late husband, who often cheated on her, and partly because she’s very lonely by herself.
Doris – The most conservative of the three and the one who refuses to change any element in her life. Her devotion to Abe, even in death, seems borderline unhealthy. She adheres to her strict principles of love and respect and expects her friends to do the same. She is appalled when Ida starts dating Sam.
Sam – The local butcher, whose dead wife he still mourns, but who realizes that life has much to offer. He is willing to take a chance on happiness again. who gradually but firmly eases his way into Ida’s life.
Mildred – A show-off and a flirt. (smaller role, though BIG in personality)
Performance Dates: Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00, November 12, 13, 19, & 20, 2021 and Sundays at 2:30, November 14 & 21, 2021
Three Jewish widows meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husbands’ graves. Ida is sweet-tempered and ready to begin a new life; Lucille is a feisty embodiment of the girl who just wants to have fun; and Doris is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam the butcher enters the scene. He meets the widows while visiting his wife’s grave. Doris and Lucille squash the budding romance between Sam and Ida. They are guilt-stricken when this nearly breaks Ida’s heart.
