Getting Involved Backstage

At Community Theatre of Terre Haute, every production depends on the creativity and dedication of volunteers working behind the scenes. From lighting and sound to costumes, props, and stage management, our backstage teams help transform ideas into unforgettable performances.

Whether you have experience or are completely new to theatre, we’ll help you find the perfect fit. No audition required—just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn!

Areas Where You Can Help

Lighting
Help create the visual atmosphere of each production. Lighting sets the mood, highlights the action, and brings every moment to life.

  • Hang and focus lighting instruments
  • Operate the light board during rehearsals and performances

  • Work with the lighting designer to achieve the director’s vision

  • Learn basic lighting design and programming

Sound
Make sure every word, note, and effect is heard clearly. The sound team plays a key role in shaping the audience’s experience.

  • Run the sound board and manage cues during performances

  • Work with directors and designers to balance music, effects, and dialogue

  • Learn the fundamentals of live sound mixing and audio playback

  • Help pull, organize, and label costumes for each show

  • Manage backstage quick changes during performances

  • Maintain and repair costumes as needed

Props
Props add depth and realism to every scene. Help find, build, and organize the objects that make our shows shine. It’s a great role for those who love creativity and attention to detail.

  • Research, source, or build props for upcoming productions

  • Label, track, and organize props backstage

  • Ensure props are properly placed before and after each scene

Hair & Makeup
Transform actors into their characters! Volunteers assist with styling, wigs, and stage makeup.

  • Apply stage makeup and help with character styling

  • Maintain makeup and hair tools throughout the run

Run Crew
The unseen heroes of every performance! The run crew moves scenery, sets up props, and ensures every transition runs smoothly. Perfect for those who like being close to the action.

  • Move and set scenery between scenes

  • Assist with props, curtains, and scene transitions

  • Maintain a clear and safe backstage environment

  • Work closely with the stage manager during performances

Stage Management
Help coordinate the production from curtain up to final bow. Stage managers and assistant stage managers keep dress rehearsals and performances on track, call cues, and communicate between cast and crew.

  • Assist with cue calling and backstage communication

  • Coordinate set movements and ensure actors are ready

  • Support the director and ensure smooth show operations

Assistant Director
Support the director with rehearsals, note-taking, and coordination. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the directing process and leadership behind a production.

  • Lead small group rehearsals when needed

  • Communicate director feedback to cast and crew

  • Help manage schedules and maintain rehearsal flow
